Excavators are undoubtedly one of the most eye-catching pieces of machinery at various construction sites. Their massive size and powerful digging capabilities always leave a lasting impression. So, what mechanical working principle enables excavators to perform such powerful excavation operations?
Excavators primarily consist of a chassis, a slewing platform, a working attachment, a power system, a hydraulic system, and a control system.
1. Chassis
Excavator chassis typically employ either a tracked or wheeled structure. Crawler chassis offer excellent stability and maneuverability, adapting to various complex terrains; wheeled chassis offer greater maneuverability and flexibility, facilitating operation on relatively flat areas such as urban roads. The chassis provides support and mobility for the entire excavator, and its structural strength and reliability directly impact its performance and safety.
2. Slewing Platform
The slewing platform is mounted on the chassis and can rotate 360 degrees. It carries important components such as the operator's cab, power system, hydraulic system, and working attachment. The slewing platform is connected to the chassis via a slewing bearing and driven by a hydraulic motor, enabling the excavator to steer left and right and adjust its working position. This flexible slewing capability allows the excavator to excavate targets in various directions without moving the chassis.
3. Working Attachment
The working attachment is the core component of the excavator's excavation operations and primarily consists of the boom, dipper arm, bucket, and corresponding hydraulic cylinders.
Boom: The boom connects the slewing platform to the dipper arm and is typically made of high-strength steel. The boom hydraulic cylinders extend and retract the boom, thereby adjusting the height of the bucket.
Bucket: The dipper arm connects the boom and bucket and serves to further extend the excavation range. The extension and retraction of the dipper arm hydraulic cylinders controls the extension and retraction of the dipper arm, enabling excavation at varying distances.
Bucket: The bucket is the component that directly contacts the excavated material. Its shape and structure are designed for different excavation tasks. Buckets are typically made of wear-resistant steel and offer excellent cutting and loading capabilities. The bucket hydraulic cylinder can control the opening and closing of the bucket to achieve excavation and loading of materials.
